Tiger shark diving in Fuvahmulah

Tiger shark diving is one of the rarest experiences underwater, and it is not only for certified divers: beginners can join a DSD (Discover Scuba Diving) session with an instructor, and training and certification are available right on the island. Route, season and skill level are discussed individually based on your experience.

Our dive centre and hotel on the island

We work with Maathundi Hotel — a cosy 18-room boutique hotel on the northern side of Fuvahmulah, next to the famous Thoondu Beach, with a rooftop restaurant and pool — and Shark Expedition Fuvahmulah, a PADI 5-Star Dive Centre. The fleet includes 2 dive dhonis and 1 speedboat, with all equipment 100% insured. The centre runs three dives a day, including a guaranteed tiger shark dive at "Tiger Zoo" — you choose which ones to join. No night dives, for safety reasons.

When to go

Tiger sharks are seen in Fuvahmulah almost every day, year-round — a resident population, especially at Tiger Point. Other sightings are more seasonal:

  • Hammerhead sharks — most likely April–June, on early-morning blue water dives
  • Thresher sharks — April–July, best in May–June
  • Oceanic mantas — April–June and November–December, near cleaning stations
  • Whale sharks — rare, May–October, during tuna migrations
  • Mola mola (ocean sunfish) — very rare, August–December, in deep water

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a diving certificate to dive with tiger sharks?

No. Beginners can dive with an instructor on a Discover Scuba Diving (DSD) session, or take the Open Water course right on the island. If you already have Open Water, that is enough — no advanced level is required.

How deep is the tiger shark dive?

No deeper than 10 metres, and around 5 metres on average. At the start of the dive you go down a little deeper, then the group settles at shallow depth where the sharks come close.

When is the best time to see tiger sharks in Fuvahmulah?

Any time of year: tiger sharks are a resident population and are seen almost every day. Hammerheads, thresher sharks and oceanic mantas are seasonal — see the calendar above.

How many dives are included?

Depending on the package, 2 or 3 dives in total for your 6-night stay — you choose which days to dive. Every programme includes the tiger shark dive at "Tiger Zoo". The price also covers the hotel and the domestic flight Malé — Fuvahmulah — Malé. Extra dives can be added on the spot.

How do I get to Fuvahmulah?

By domestic flight from Malé. Round-trip flights and airport transfers on the island are included in our package.
