Maldivian Food: What to Try

Maldivian cuisine is built on fish, rice and coconut — simple, but full of flavour, with clear ties to South Indian and Sri Lankan cooking.

Local Dishes Worth Trying

Mas huni — shredded tuna, coconut, onion and chilli, the traditional local breakfast. Garudhiya — a clear fish broth with lime and chilli, served with rice. Roshi — thin flatbread, similar to Indian chapati, served alongside almost everything.

Local Islands vs Resorts

On local islands, food mostly comes from small cafés serving genuine home cooking at accessible prices. Resort kitchens are almost always international, adapted for guests from everywhere, and traditional dishes are often served in a lighter, "tourist" version.

Good to Know Beforehand

Most local islands don't sell alcohol — this reflects local norms rather than a rule aimed at tourists specifically. If that matters to you, check the island type in advance or choose a resort.

Seafood and Freshness

Tuna, lobster and reef fish in the Maldives are often literally hours out of the water — ask island staff about fishing trips followed by a cook-up if you want to try it at its freshest.
