How to Choose an Island in the Maldives

The Maldives isn't one island — it's nearly 1200 islands across 26 atolls. Your choice shapes both the price and what you'll see.

Resort or local island — where the choice starts

The first decision isn't "which atoll" — it's "which type of island".

A resort is an entire island leased by one hotel: a private beach, all-inclusive infrastructure, full isolation from the outside world. The classic postcard image of the Maldives.

A local island is real archipelago life: guesthouses instead of resorts, local residents as neighbours, affordable prices. The beaches are just as good, but alcohol isn't sold on most local islands.

Many travellers don't pick just one — they combine both: a few nights on a local island for the experience and the price, then a resort for full relaxation before flying home.

Atolls: how they differ

Malé Atoll — for getting there fast

The closest atolls to the airport — a speedboat transfer of 30 minutes to 90 minutes. Plenty of mid-range and upscale resorts, plus popular local islands like Maafushi and Gulhi. Good for a short trip when you don't want to spend half a day travelling.

Ari Atoll — for divers and whale shark fans

One of the best-known atolls among divers, with regular whale shark and manta ray encounters. Getting there takes longer: a seaplane or a 2-4 hour boat ride. Good if diving and snorkelling are the main point of the trip.

Baa Atoll — a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve

Famous for Hanifaru Bay, where mantas gather to feed from May to November. Good for travellers who care about untouched nature.

Fuvahmulah and the southern atolls

A standalone island-atoll in the south, known for tiger sharks close to shore year-round. Harder to reach (a domestic flight), and almost no tourists. Good for travellers who've already been to the Maldives and want something beyond the postcard.

How to choose: three practical questions

  1. How many days do you have? Fewer than 5-6 — it's more sensible to stay closer to Malé.
  2. What do you want to see underwater? A specific target (whale sharks, mantas, a particular reef) dictates the atoll.
  3. What's your accommodation budget? Local islands are the most affordable option, mid-range resorts cost more, and luxury overwater villas cost the most.
