How you get from the airport to your island isn't just a formality — it's part of your budget and part of the experience. There are three options, and they differ a lot in price and comfort.
The most common option for islands in and around Malé Atoll — from 20 minutes to a couple of hours. Usually the most affordable way to get to your island.
Regular ferries between local islands and Malé are the cheapest option, but run on a fixed schedule and not always daily to farther islands. Works well if your arrival time is flexible.
The fastest way to reach far-flung atolls, and the only option for some remote resorts. It's also the most expensive and most scenic transfer — a low-altitude flight over the atolls that many call a highlight in itself. Note: seaplanes generally don't fly after dark, which is worth factoring into your flight times.
